As a San Francisco Bay Area engagement and wedding photographer, I’m always on the lookout for stunning locations that offer a unique backdrop for my clients’ love stories. One spot that has long been on my photography bucket list is the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach. With its enchanting cypress trees and serene coastal views, it’s a dream setting for capturing intimate moments. Although its remote location can be a challenge for some clients, I was thrilled when E & P chose this breathtaking spot for their engagement photos, followed by a Half Moon Bay engagement session. Combining these two beautiful locations made their session truly memorable.

The Perfect Location: Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is nestled along the coast just south of San Francisco. This location has always captivated me, not just because of its natural beauty, but also because of the serene, almost otherworldly atmosphere it exudes. The towering cypress trees, with their twisted branches and lush canopies, create a secluded, fairytale-like setting that feels worlds away from the bustling city. The reserve also offers stunning coastal views, with waves crashing against the rocky shoreline, adding a touch of drama to the scene.

The day of the shoot arrived, and despite the foggy, chilly weather, E & P’s excitement was palpable. E looked stunning in her favorite color, dusty baby blue. The soft, muted tone of her dress contrasted beautifully with the dark, moody surroundings, making her the focal point of each shot. P complemented her perfectly in a classic white shirt and navy pants, his outfit adding a touch of timeless elegance to the photos.

The fog, often seen as a challenge in outdoor photography, actually enhanced the atmosphere that day. It wrapped around the cypress trees, softening the light and adding a sense of intimacy to the images. The cold weather might have been uncomfortable, but it gave E & P all the more reason to cuddle up close, resulting in some truly heartwarming moments. Their love and connection were evident in every frame, with each embrace and smile radiating warmth against the cool, misty backdrop.

From Moss Beach to Half Moon Bay

After capturing a collection of beautiful shots at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, we moved to our second location: Half Moon Bay. The drive from Moss Beach to Half Moon Bay is one of my favorites, with scenic coastal views that never fail to inspire. Half Moon Bay offers a different kind of beauty, one that is more open and expansive, with vast beaches and sweeping ocean views. It’s a perfect contrast to the enclosed, intimate feel of the cypress grove at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

At Half Moon Bay, E made a quick outfit change into another simple yet stunning dress—a flowy blue number that perfectly matched the coastal setting. The dress moved beautifully in the breeze, adding a sense of motion and fluidity to the photos. We took advantage of the beach’s natural beauty, capturing E & P against the backdrop of the iconic cliffs and crashing waves.

One of the highlights of this part of the session was shooting at the beach near the Ritz-Carlton. The hotel’s elegant architecture and the stunning ocean views made for some truly iconic shots. The beach at Half Moon Bay, with its expansive shoreline and rugged cliffs, provided a perfect canvas for capturing E & P’s love in a setting that felt both grand and intimate.

Why Location Matters in Engagement Photography

Choosing the right location for an engagement session is more than just picking a pretty spot. It’s about finding a place that resonates with the couple and complements their style and personality. 

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and Half Moon Bay were perfect choices for E & P because they offered both the intimate, magical feel of the cypress grove and the open, dramatic landscape of the beach. These locations allowed me to capture a range of emotions and moments, from quiet, tender embraces to joyful, carefree laughter.
