Family Session at Filoli | San Francisco Bay Area Photographer

Spring is the perfect time for family portraits, and as a San Francisco Bay Area family photographer, there’s no better place to capture the season’s essence than Filoli Historic House & Garden in Woodside, California. Just a 35-minute drive from San Francisco, Filoli is considered a hidden gem, with many Bay Area residents unaware of its beauty or having never visited. With its stunning blooms, sprawling landscapes, and timeless elegance, Filoli serves as a backdrop like no other, especially when wisteria is in bloom. It was a joy to photograph the A family during this breathtaking season, and I’m thrilled to share some of the highlights from our session.

As a San Francisco Bay Area photographer, you can never fully predict the timing of nature’s splendor, but when you do catch it, it feels like magic. This spring, I was able to photograph the A family just as the wisteria was in full bloom, draping the historic estate with its soft purples and rich greens. Wisteria blooms for such a short time, and it’s always a treat when sessions line up with this rare display of beauty.

Meet the A Family

One of the things I love most about family photography is getting to know each family’s unique dynamic. The A family was no exception. From the moment we met, it was clear how much love this family shares. Watching their interactions and witnessing the joy they take in each other’s company is such a heartwarming experience for a photographer.

Little Isaac, their energetic toddler, was full of curiosity and wonder throughout the entire session. And then there was his baby sister, the perfect little subject who was content just being along for the ride. It’s always a challenge to capture the attention of both a baby and a toddler, but the magic lies in capturing the in-between moments—the giggles, the kisses, and even the “oops” moments when things don’t go according to plan.

It was so clear that Isaac had learned how to love his baby sister by watching his parents. This type of modeling is such a beautiful thing to witness and document. Isaac is at that wonderful age where he’s curious, busy, and often wants things his way, but when it came to his sister, there was nothing but gentleness. Throughout the session, I was able to capture Isaac lovingly giving his baby sister kisses and pats on the head. He never fought for attention or tried to overshadow her; instead, he always found little moments to shower her with affection.

The Challenges of Photographing Toddlers (and Babies)

Anyone who has tried to photograph toddlers knows that they have a mind of their own. Isaac was no exception, which made the session both challenging and rewarding. Toddlers are unpredictable, and their moods can change in an instant. As a family photographer, you have to work quickly, staying attuned to their rhythms and adapting to their energy levels. Sometimes, they’re willing to sit still and smile, but more often than not, you’ll find them on the move, running from one spot to the next, or in Isaac’s case, bursting into impromptu tears and then seconds later, giggling.

When working with toddlers, I’ve learned that the key is to embrace the chaos. Rather than trying to force poses or smiles, I focus on capturing their natural behaviors and interactions. This approach allows me to create images that truly reflect the child’s personality and the family’s love. It’s those candid moments—the spontaneous laughter, the tender kisses, the surprised expressions—that make family sessions so special.

Photographing babies comes with its own set of challenges, too. A baby’s schedule is often unpredictable, and you have to be patient and work around their needs. But there’s something magical about photographing a baby in the arms of their parents or nestled close to their sibling. Those moments of connection are fleeting, and I love being able to freeze them in time for families to cherish.

Looking Forward to the Next Session

As we wrapped up the session, I couldn’t help but think about how much Isaac and his sister will change between now and the next time I photograph them. Children grow so quickly, and each session is a new opportunity to document those changes and milestones. I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to work with the A family and see how much their little ones have grown.

It’s always an honor to be invited into a family’s life to capture their special moments, and the A family made this session an absolute joy. I can’t wait to continue this journey with them and to capture more of their love, laughter, and growth in the years to come.
